As of 2024, the Bakken Formation in North Dakota has a significant number of active oil wells. Reports indicate that there are approximately 18,674 producing oil wells in the region. This represents a considerable increase from previous years, driven by ongoing investments and advancements in drilling technology, such as three-mile lateral wells and enhanced oil recovery techniques (JPT) (Rextag) (ND Oil).
As of 2024, there are approximately 2,500 active flares in the Bakken Formation. This number reflects ongoing flaring practices despite efforts to reduce flaring and its environmental impact. Flaring in the Bakken remains a significant issue due to the high levels of methane emissions and other pollutants associated with the process. Recent studies have shown that a considerable portion of these flares are either unlit or inefficient, leading to higher-than-expected methane emissions, which exacerbate climate change concerns (Graham Sustainability Institute) (University of Michigan News) (EIA Homepage).
